This ticket is actually invalid. When starting from a new stream, Kinesis does in fact appear to follow the same behavior as kinesalite (keeping parent shard configurations). The weird thing is that we do have one Kinesis stream (which has been created a couple of months ago) where the describe-stream configuration lists only the child shards as described above (and omits all the parent/ancestor shards). We'll have to investigate further, for now I'm closing this issue as obsolete/invalid.
