I just noticed that on opening a buffer, the syntastic signs show up, but as soon as the buffer is saved (even with no changes) they are overridden by the signify signs/

Hmm, for me it's the other way around. When I open the file, Sy signs appear and when I save syntastic overwrites Sy's. I'll look into it.

Have you look into the load order of the Plugins?
Sy gets loaded first => Syntastic writes Symbols
Syntastic gets loaded first => Sy writes Symbols
