Not sure if forking is the right way to go though. I only now found out about `less.php and it seems really active. Your motiviations for abandoning and forking are not clear to me. Does less.php have problems that are not fixable?

I depends on what you mean by not fixable. I tried to fix things which were simple, but after a week of fixing more fixes needed to be made (with new commits to the repo) and I saw that the author is going in different direction than I would like to go. (Not using any autoloader (oyejorge/less.php#31 (comment)), importing files, cache...) so I decided to not follow that direction and to separate it. I know that it creates a form of schism, but I think that was the only way to go.
Note: The less.php is not a fork of the original https://github.com/Mordred/less.php project too.
