Hi @eugene-lazarev, yes russian characters must be encoded. For example Россия should be encoded \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f.

@mledoze, thanks for answer. I respect your rules, but I have some issue about that.
The Unicode string is not human-readable, so it is extremely hard to find mistakes in translated strings later. What do you think about this?

You are right. Originally I used encoded characters (with \uxxxx) in the master file to get the best language support especially in JavaScript [1] but it appears that it is possible to have unicode strings in a JSON file [2].

I just updated the build script (in 57d466c) to generate a new countries-unescaped.json file with unescaped characters. You can use this new file to find any mistakes in the file.
