Create backups of ~/.bash_history

Quick start

Get the script

cd ~
git clone https://github.com/mozey/bash_hist .bash_hist

Run it from your profile e.g. ~/.profile or ~/.bash_profile

if [ -f ~/.bash_hist/bak.sh ]; then . ~/.bash_hist/bak.sh; fi

Set HISTSIZE and create func to query archived history (in .bashrc). Removing duplicates in grep output. TODO Sort by number of matches instead, e.g. "histogram"?

Query archived history

bash_hist's Issues

hist should show most used hits first

The hist func removes duplicates and sorts alphabetically. Would be cool if it sorts results by most used in addition to deduplicating?

Support other types of history files

e.g. .mysql_history, .python_history, etc?

Use backup dirs for archived history

Currently backup files go in ${HOME}. This makes searching current and archived history easy, i.e. the hist function can grep ... ~/.bash_history*. However, it also clutters the home dir.
