documents category name limit as 40, and individual name metrics as 30.

Which 'navigation: time_to_non_blank_paint' conforms to. So, maybe something else here?

40 category name + 88 individual metric name == 128 total length limit, which has a nice ring to it

For the current m-c gecko tree, the longest name in the Histograms.json file is:
'CACHE_SERVICE_LOCK_WAIT_MAINTHREAD_NSCACHEENTRYDESCRIPTOR_DOOMANDFAILPENDINGREQUESTS'

which is 84 characters long, not including glean's category. It seem as if a 100 character name limit should be sufficient, but if there is a hard limit please document that in end-user docs.

This is exactly the kind of naming we're actively trying to discourage :) While I think we should investigate the discrepancy between what the docs say (filed this bug), I don't think we should go beyond 30 characters for metric names. Closing the issue here, let's take the conversation to that bug.
