I would also like feedback from the maintainers if they would be interested in a PR for this feature?

I am closing/withdrawing this issue.
I have made changes which get me close to this approach here:

Hey! THank you for opening up this issue. I think the RPC idea is really cool, but it feels like it'd be better as a module built on top of async-mqtt.
I'd be happy to point people towards such a library in the README so that people that could have use from it will find it easier.
