I have just tried the following:

var msgpack = require('msgpack2');

var data = [];

for (var i = 0; i < 10000; i++) {
    data.push({
        name: 'whatever',
        value: "Element #"+i
    });
}

var packed = (process.argv[2] == 'm') ? msgpack.pack(data) : JSON.stringify(data);

Result:

$ time node test.js m

real    0m2.607s
user    0m2.592s
sys 0m0.008s
$ time node test.js

real    0m0.069s
user    0m0.052s
sys 0m0.016s

So json seems to be 43 times faster here.
