onSortModelChange is not callled when when the rows are sorted it called when sorting model changes. sortModel is an array that's hold fields name and direction of the sort. what you need is sortedRowsSet.

I think we can make this event public as it could be useful in situations like this and I can see no workaround to this other than subscribing to the event itself.
