Have you tried using setState({value: ""} as described in "controlled components" here?

Apologies. I should have mentioned I'm using js version, not React

Try setting the <input> element's value to "" and then triggering a "change" event. That will reset the .mui--is-empty class without confusing the element's state. Another option is to delete the old element and create a new one.

In general though, React was designed to deal with a lot of the shortcomings of dealing with state in Vanilla-JS. Have you considered using React?

That didn't work for me but I may be doing something differently to what you're explaining.
