It is not really the protocol itself but the reason why the connection failed (specifically the layer where something failed): TLS usually means sslyze received a TLS alert, TCP usually means the connection was abruptly closed, etc. The whole string (protocol, error message) is the "error" so I don't think there's value in splitting this. Also, the information by itself is not really useful unless you're like debugging an SSL stack.
