I have no idea what was going on but I think I messed up the upgrade to cordova somehow. Got it working now. Went back to basics, started all over again and its behaving now.

@dfibuch when you said you started all over again, what did you do specifically?

I upgraded my app and every time I try to save a picture, I get a denied error for WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE even though it's in the manifest. Even with this plugin, it's always returning false and never actually prompting.

@jamesdixon I literally removed all platforms, all plugins and then added the platforms back first and then the plugins. I believe when you add the plugins after the platforms are added various hooks will run, which don't if you haven't got the platforms in. Also, there seems to be a difference running ionic plugin add and cordova plugin add - it works for me if I run cordova plugin add.

Don't forget you can chain the command so you can do cordova plugin add cordova-plugin-X cordova-plugin-Y cordova-plugin-Z
