I just released a new version of ipychart (0.3.3) which should fix this issue. Please note that ipychart is using chartjs-plugin-datalabels in its 0.7.0 version to generate datalabels. By looking at the documentation for this version of the plugin, I don't feel like it's possible to format the datalabels directly from the dataset key but rather from the options object.

Therefore, this modified version of your code should work in the new version of ipychart:

dataset = {
    'labels': ['Data 1', 'Data 2', 'Data 3', 'Data 4', 'Data 5', 'Data 6', 'Data 7', 'Data 8'],
    'datasets': [{data': [14, 22, 36, 48, 60, 90, 28, 12], datalabels": {"display": True}}]
}

options = {'plugins': {'datalabels': {'formatter': formatter}}}

mychart = Chart(data=dataset, kind='bar', options=options)
mychart
