Would something like (Buddy) next to the username be enough, or how would you expect them to be highlighted?

Expect nick to be highlighted with custom color. As a variant some icon can be added next to name. What you think will work best to make them seen right away.

My suggestion is to make 3 new icons for Online, Away and Offline status indicators that have a little star or similar favorite motive overlays, and then that would be a good reason to implement status icons as requested in #1429.
Maybe even the same Status icon column should also be used to implement #2100?
