Luau saying it's 5.1 compatible means existing Lua code that works on Lua 5.1 will work on Luau. Not that you can drop Luau in place of the version NLua uses and expect it to work that doesn't work in the managed world. NLua will need to explicitly support it.

I will say Luau does look quite nice though.

What I think would be nice is for NLua to ship multiple managed variants that focus on their own Lua interpreter. So NLua for Luau or NLua for Pluto. Does add LOTS of management to handle them all but would give people the benefit of choice. Though maybe something can be done to automate this? It's possible to generate C# Native Binding projects, ImGui.NET has a CodeGenerator project that takes in data generated from the C bindings of ImGui to generate appropriate classes/methods in C# without errors.

That being said I personally don't see NLua supporting anything other than Lua5.4. Asking NLua to possibly support another Lua variant is a huge undertaking. (Removed incorrect NLua update info)
