Hi there, thanks for the kind words.
About the 2 issues

1. I have tested the directive on the web from mobile and it seems to work for me. On the contrary I have not tested this embedded in a mobile app, so it's hard for me to guess what's not working in this case. There was a recently closed, similar issue about this (#22), but it will prove hardly helpful i guess. If you find that there's something in the directive preventing it to work as it should in said environment please post your findings. By the way, another past issue where you can "imply" that it works on Ionic is #16.
2. The menu-state attribute can be used for that, from the time #4 was closed. Just attach a callback to the actions you define for the buttons and change the menu state from there. An example function can be found here.

I have problem number 1 as well. The menu wont open. Tried with/without custom template.
It works on my phone if I try the online demo version.

My test is as simple as

    <mfb-menu position="br" label="test" toggling-method="click">
      <mfb-button label="a"></mfb-button>
      <mfb-button label="b"></mfb-button>
    </mfb-menu>

mfb version: 0.4.0 from bower

Looks like this (problem 1) is fixed in angular material 0.9, I just tested it. 👍
I think the problem was ngTouch related, it was biting me using the side-menu as well (which also got fixed in 0.9).

0.9 is currently in rc2. Get it using bower install angular-material#~0.9

I just tried with ionic 1.1.0 and the button works perfectly.
