What android versions has this been reproduced on?
Is it reproducible on the demo of merlin?

I haven't tried demo to be honest. It's Android 9, Huawei P20 Pro, Merlin 1.2.0.

So I just checked and it works as-expected (disconnect isn't even fired on connection change).

What's strange is there's not much difference between demo and what I do. The only thing I imagine it could be is that I use application context. Could this be the issue?

If you have an issue that you would like patched we would recommend trying to reproduce the problem with the demo and then supplying said demo so that we can reproduce on our end and patch the problem. It's very hard for us to fix it otherwise unfortunately.
