I'm not sure what you mean. Termbox (C version) doesn't have a windows implementation, so we can't really talk about windows. Linux doesn't have any "native widgets". Termbox is a low level terminal-based abstraction, if you want to create a system of widgets you'll have to do it on your own.

In the Go version of the termbox there is an example showing how you can do that: https://github.com/nsf/termbox-go/blob/master/_demos/editbox.go. It should be fairly readable to a C programmer. If you want to change the entire background, you just fill it using this function: https://github.com/nsf/termbox-go/blob/master/_demos/editbox.go#L15-L21, etc.
