I think this may happen due to the response validator middleware trying to iterate through the items of an array type. If items is not defined then it will try to iterate through undefined, resulting in Unexpected token u(ndefined) in JSON at position 0.
The spec is valid since OpenAPI allows to specify array type without specifying its item types. I will look into it.
