I was having similar issues. Just updated to the beta and that seems to have fixed my issues with Tunnelblick.

Happening with Tunnelblick and ProtonVPN’s native client app on 10.12. Either ProtonVPN works if LULU is briefly disabled for the time VPN connection is initiated.
With Tunnelblick, reenabling LULU after connection is established breaks all connectivity.
Workaround in #9 doesn’t help (neither app appears to have openvpn binary within its package).
