The functionality of opam-installer is built into opam, so when installing through opam, the tool is not needed: it's only really needed when installing "by hand" through make opaminstall.

Ah OK, thanks @AltGr for your reply!
Thus the solution just consists in doing opam install opam-installer when building from source.
BTW I've just realized that this step is not mentioned in the first howto, only in the fourth howto.
