I'm specifically using a silent sound to keep my background timer going on iOS. I couldn't get it working any other way. The actual function of my app is to send heartbeats to a server with the users GPS position, but without playing the silent audio this would not work. If I open another app that uses audio on iOS it stops the background timer. On Android, the silent audio of the background timer stops the audio of the foreground app every time it's played. In any event, it would be a lot better if I didn't need to play the silent audio, but that was the only way I could get this to work at all... +1
