compilation failure with gcc-4.3.x/glibc-2.8 due to missing includes and usage of deprecated headers

Thanks for the patch.  While stdlib.h, etc are technically deprecated in c++, 
this is
more of a wish by the language writers, than an actual plan to remove the 
include
files.  Based on my talks with people on the c++ committee, my understanding is 
these
header files will actually never be removed.  I prefer to use the C #include 
files
for C functions, so my plan is to leave those as they are.

I'll definitely add string.h, though!  Thanks for the pointer.
