I guess ideally the regexp would be configurable via a parameter to the source service.

This issue is severe for nightly package generation from git repositories, where a good version-numbering scheme is something like "<latest-tag>-<revisions-since>-b<hash>", with hash being hexadecimal. Even if no hash is present, it is still a good idea to use a dash instead of a period to separate the first two variables, to avoid misordering between revision releases (e.g., 1.2.3, no commits since -> 1.2.3.0) and minor releases with commits since (e.g., 1.2, 4 commits since -> 1.2.4).
