@lolkasasa Hi. This is unrelated to qgis-20 (as far as I can tell). Note that this is even an issue across platforms. Specifically this issue that is for an unrelated program, PostgreApp, I think holds the answer, because the issue is really about upgrading an existing database.

Are you trying to open a database that already had PostGIS 2.0 extensions installed? Homebrew's is at 2.1.

Is the Postgres server you are using not Homebrew's? The extension is relative to each Postgres install.

You can try doing brew reinstall postgis, but I don't think that will do the trick.

Side note: the --with-postgis option doesn't actually add anything to the QGIS build; it is a convenience option to ensure PostGIS is installed as an extension to Homebrew's Postgres install. However, Homebrew's Postgres is used by the qgis-20 build to ensure the Postgres client embedded in QGIS is newer than the one supplied by Apple.

This does not mean you need to use Homebrew's Postgres/PostGIS setup. You can use any other Postgres server, but it will not utilize Homebrew's PostGIS, pgrouting, etc. Those components would have to be separately installed/managed for the other Postgres server.
