Ah - can't have a write-only register unless it explicitly implements byte-write (because the automatic byte I/O handling relies on being able to read the register). Doh!
The KL11 manual actually says this register is "load only" ... which is how it is implemented in kl11.py but that's inconsistent with relying on mmio for automatic byte-write conversion as you ran into.
I may think about a more general mod in mmio byteme to allow for write-only registers that still want automatic byte I/O (needs to catch this trap and synthesize the zero - same fix just expressed without making the device write-only registers respond) but this simpler fix to kl11 will be good for now. Until, that is, later we discover a diagnostic that complains about KL11 transmit buf register being readable when it isn't supposed to be :)
