@oliverland I'm the founder of maptimize, a clustering service. I'm about to launch a new version where you can have a heatmap visualisation. It's not @pa7 heatmap code (even if I think you could use it).
It's not launched officially yet but if you are interested send me a message on github.

I'm sorry, I really dont like to talk about commercial product on open-source project. I do a lot of open-source too. But if it can help @oliverland.

Sorry for the late response.
There were some major performance improvements lately: 1k datapoints now takes about 60ms to render.
But if you're having 50k datapoints you should think about whether all of them are really required for a significant visualization. In most cases aggregating data before passing it to the heatmap visualization makes sense.
Let me know if it works for you now.

Do you have any recommendation on what sort of aggregation method to look at in reducing the size of the data?
