Obviously the docs aren't good enough. Pattern Lab is meant to be used locally for development and then you move your files to your host when you want a client to review. I haven't used Pattern Lab on Mavericks yet but this should be your workflow:
- Download Pattern Lab to your Sites folder or wherever you normally store your projects locally.
- Open the
scripts/
folder and double-clickgenerateSite.command
. This will generate your PL site for the first time. You'll have a console window that will pop open. You can close it after it finishes. - Open
public/index.html
in your favorite browser. You don't need Apache or anything running locally for it to work. It helps but it's not required. You'll see your copy of the PL site. - Edit patterns in
source/_patterns/
to your heart's content. The material under "Working With Patterns" should be helpful. I'm assuming this is what you mean by "add to the page like a CMS." - Regenerate your site by double-clicking
scripts/generateSite.command
again and refresh your browser to see your changes.
Doing 4 & 5 repeatedly is annoying so it's also possible to "watch" files for changes and have PL auto-generate your site. PL can also auto-reload your browser for you.
Once you're ready for a client to review just upload public/
to your host and you should be all set.
I apologize for the confusion. I hope that clears it up some.

I tweaked our instructions a little bit. Hopefully they're clearer.
