Woah:

this week I tried the first solution (fixed height and mapping). I found so many disadvantages that would require manual fixes/workarounds, that I guess that the second approach is needed (using a custom scrollbar)

the larger/main problems were:

  • when using the scaling method you basically need to fix the rows and only load data. while this works it results in a strange scrolling experience
  • scaled scrolling tends to move you too fast because you are mapping from the fixed smaller space (100k px) to a potentially larger space (50 000k px) and thus small movements in scrolling let you jump without any connection to the values you just saw. So one would need to implement a two way scrolling mode:
    • small-step-scrolling that only get the direct next set of values and is only triggered by smaller scoll steps (you need to track the previous position and check the delta to the current scroll)
    • jump-scrolling which is basically the normal scaled mode
