This sounds like more of a problem with the Sprockets configuration, right?

Sprockets::Helpers only handles generating the paths/URLs for your views and other assets. Even if the assets are precompiled using rake, Sprockets::Helpers should still use the paths/digests from Sprockets in order for things to work properly.

I see.

Is there anyway of looking in the manifest first (if there is one) so we don't force sprockets to compile the assets in production?

Ok, I manages to serve the assets from the public folder in production (simply by not starting sprockets).

However as I mentioned above the assets are still compiled on page load since I use asset_path.

Could I use the manifest.json file to find the asset paths?
