The first day of phrase only works with months, or month names. It can currently not be combined with this year. This is in the documentation too: https://www.php.net/manual/en/datetime.formats.php#datetime.formats.relative

However, this is an often mentioned issues, so we probably should add this.

As the gregorian calendar is used anyhow the request can be rewritten to first day of january as that will use the current year if no year is specified.
Or this year Jan 1st 00:00:00
Also first day of january this year 00:00:00 seems to work
from php-src.
