This is actually possible using rel, it's just not documented yet: https://github.com/pifantastic/grunt-s3/blob/master/tasks/lib/S3Task.js#L96

for instance :

upload : [{
  src : 'dist/',
  dest : '/',
  rel : 'dist'
}]

from grunt-s3.

I have just discovered this very convenient feature by reverse engineering the code. It would be really helpful to have it described in the documentation or in the examples ...
