Thanks for reaching out! Column Formats are applied directly to fields/site columns by using the column menu and choosing Format this column. This can also be done from the field settings screen. View Formats are applied using the view menu and choosing Format this view.

Attaching .json files to list items is allowed, but will have no impact on applying the format. Opening a .json file in the browser has nothing to do with formatting or even SharePoint. You can configure your browser's file handling but that is beyond the scope of this issues list.

This issues list is for issues related to the list formatting samples. If you are having trouble applying one of those samples, please feel free to reopen.
