I'll have to check this on the browser side anyways, so this isn't so important, but I figured I should point it out.

I'm not sure this is worth the trouble. To validate an image, I think we'd have to download and read the metadata to try to ensure it is indeed an image. That's enough trouble in itself, but that only ensures the URL points to a valid picture at that one point in time. It could change the next second.
