Why do you claim that the option should be called 'remesh'? This is not true, the option is called 'remsh', exactly as it is in the code. Reference: http://erlang.org/doc/man/erl.html

Also, I've verified that 'ejabberdctl debug' works just fine on master branch.

Most probably you just have invalid ejabberd setup and 'ejabberdctl debug' fails. Erlang tends to ignore unknown parameters, so if you change -remsh (proper name) to -remesh (invalid name) you will only get separate Erlang shell that is not connected to running ejabberd. This is obviously not what 'ejabberdctl debug' is intended to do.

So in short, ejabberdctl.template is correct. Please debug your ejabberd installation to see why 'ejabberdctl debug' does not work for you.
