Whoa this is too much for me to grok at the moment. Allow me a few days and I'll get back to you (GridFS w/REST sounds like a nightmare come true, but maybe I'm just too tired).

Please try to think a bit more about it :) GridFS is the proper way to save binary files so supporting it should be in your plan. But I agree with you, it will be very complex to perform. Maybe the first step would be to totally abstract the chunk table and only make the content of the file available when performing a GET on a single element.
