I think the difference is that the assert True in this script isn't being counted as covered:

def pytest_generate_tests(metafunc):
    for i in range(10):
        metafunc.addcall()

def test_foo():
    assert True
    if sys.version_info[0] > 5:
        assert False

Yes, this looks like an issue in coverage itself. You should try to reproduce these errors without pytest-cov and if you succeed forwarding this issue to coverage.

I have checked this. I guess the JIT optimizes just too good and removes the assert True :)

Should be fixed in cc37bac.
