Though I'm not sure if the protocol will stay as is. I'd love to move away from a custom protocol, but I haven't found anything similar :|

Nothing I could find. As for "future changes" I am likely to move towards using protocol buffers for the frame payloads (ack, data, window size messages, etc). But since the protocol is versioned, this shouldn't be hard to support.

For future maintainers, it might interesting I recently wrote a simple implementation of the Beats protocol (Lumberjack's successor): https://github.com/eht16/pylogbeat

The protocol implementation is probably not complete as it is still not documented completely.
But for basic usage it works and might be improved in the future.
