OK. But if possible let's keep this as an "extra". The plotting is not core to pyresample users.

I agree.
I stumbled upon this problem myself when preparing pyresample tests to run in travis-ci. I had to deactivate the plot tests just for this reason, since the installation of basemap is problematic with pip.
Maybe that's why it wasn't added to the extra requirements.

No problem. I am looking at it now, but I am not exactly sure yet how to specify custom addresses in extra_requires.
@mraspaud You are not against letting Travis resolve system dependencies (libgeos-dev in this case) via apt-get, are you?
