So the error I got was "Time Out" and I hadn't realised that the executing the circuit without specifying my own timeout value would make the default 60. Seems to be alright now, thanks!

Yeah, we have improved a lot this part of the code in the current development branch... anyway, my bet is that you are getting an error from the backend, and this is why get_counts() is not working.
Could you check first that there's no error in the first place? ... something like:
if result.get_error() is not None:
print('Hmmm something went wrong: {}'.format(result.get_error())
else:
# Got results! ....
print('Results: {}'.format(result.get_counts()))
