Recently issue 136 is the same as this.  We would like to support type 
conversion, but this is not currently supported in the OGR/GDAL API.  There are 
ways to work around this, so we will revisit for 1.8.  In the mean time, the 
recommended way to change types is as follows:
1) Create a new variable with a different type
2) Copy the old var to the new var using Variable Calculations
3) Delete the old field
4) Rename the new field to the old field
