I took the advice from the rails issue. There's no exception now, but I'm unable to access the locals. The lion local is defined, but returns nothing.

There's definitely an issue here, can you do the following monkey patch ...

class JbuilderTemplate < Jbuilder
  def partial!(options, locals = {})
    case options
    when Hash
      options[:locals] ||= {}
      options[:locals].merge!(:json => self)
      @context.render(options)
    else
      @context.render(options, locals.merge(:json => self))
    end
  end
end

And let me know how that works.

You can use this json.partial! :partial => "item", :formats => [:json], :locals => { :lion => lion } for your app
