Here is a quick function (inspired by source_gist from devtools) to read a file from a gist.

read_gist <- function(gist_url, ...){
  contents <- RCurl::getURL(gist_url)
  handle <- textConnection(contents)
  on.exit(close(handle))
  readLines(handle, ...)
}

Here is another handy function to read a csv file no matter what type of a source it is.

read_csv <- function(csv_file, ...){
  is_web_file = grepl('^http', csv_file)
  is_secure   = grepl('^https', csv_file)
  if (is_web_file){
    csv_file = RCurl::getURL(csv_file)
  }
  if (is_secure){
    csv_file = textConnection(csv_file)
  }
  my_data = read.csv(csv_file, ...)
}
