I've found the problem:
In configureDefaultState, the constant property of the foregroundViewTop constraint is set to foregroundView.bounds.height / 2. However, at this point, the bounds of the view are not determined yet, which is why (for me) it is set to 400. Hence, you can't see the foregroundView anywhere.
You could either

• implement a method that asks for the proper height of the foregroundView (override it in your subclass)
• or add a property for the foregroundViews height constraint and get the height from there
• or just replace foregroundView.bounds.height / 2 (inside of configureDefaultState) with the literal height / 2 you have in mind for your foregroundView
