After you install a gem with an executable, if you run rbenv rehash
, the executable should then appear in your shims. You shouldn't have to do any manual copying. But maybe I'm not understanding what you want. When you say "omnipresent", do you mean you want it available across Ruby interpreters? If so, I don't think that's intended usage (or a good idea).

How come I have rails
, bundler
and stuff in shims, but not other things, like haml
, compass
etc.? I'm using Ubuntu 11.10.

Probably because you didn't gem install compass
, but installed it with Bundler. Binaries aren't installed for bundled gems—please review the Bundler documentation for an explanation.
