Indices are allowed but optional according to the SFU thesis regulations. Whether we include one or not in the standard template is a matter of philosophy: is the educational value from including "nontrivial" optional elements worth the cost of extra clutter for (and potential support requests from) the people who don't want them? I would tend to err on the side of leaving things out.
