In my opinion, you should follow behavior of email field validation in the HTML5 specification. It is stated over on the W3C specification to use the following regular expression.

/^[a-zA-Z0-9.!#$%&’*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+@[a-zA-Z0-9-]+(?:\.[a-zA-Z0-9-]+)*$/

Since this library can be seen as more of a polyfill for old browsers to implement the HTML5 validation for forms. I think that's a more reasonable way to go.

I'd think that it should accept double-quotes too, but you're right @chrisirhc , the W3C spec is probably a good thing to follow. :)

I haven't used it exactly, as it will allow things like notan@emailaddress and although technically it could be real (user@localhost) it probably isn't what a webdev would expect.

The regex in master is now:
