Putting the r96 texture pack in res folder makes the app not start

I have a laptop running on lubuntu. I had the same issue as the original poster and it was solved by disabling the precache. With render96 without hd textures and precache on the game runs smoothly. However with th precache off and the hd-texture the game's fps is now very volatile. Usually when entering a new scene you haven't played earlier the game gets very slow, after awhile it gets too fast and finally it starts to act bit more normal... occasionally.... it's like the game needs to get warmed up regarding the HD textures fot every new scene it encounters. Any ideas how to handle this issue particularly when the precache is off?
