initialize extension

Hi. I may be way off, but I'm sitting in a department store waiting on my wife, so what else am I to do but file random Github issues?

How would a class using this add something to the #initialize step?

Seems to me like it would be nicer if the existing #initialize was factored to call #properties=, which would continue to be convenient for the common case, but would allow users to call the same method explicitly if they needed (either from their custom #initialize or directly, externally, to set properties in batch later on).
