Adding support for Image layers should not be that difficult. If you look at the _renderLayer function in virtualCanvasRenerer.js you will see it is only checking for layers which are of type L.Path.
To support image layers, should just be able to add a check for the layer type, then call the layers method to update, passing in this (for the renderer to use.

If you attach your example, I will try to take a look at it when I get some time, It may be a couple of days before I can get to it though.
